Cyber Smart: Consider Copying

Please read the information below and perform any tasks asked of you.  All assignments are due tommorrow.

COPYING: WHO DOES IT?

Do you copy your homework off the Internet? There are loads of essay banks and resources to help you with your schoolwork on the internet. But do you use them to do your homework for you? Do you copy and paste large chunk of stuff off the internet to put in essays and projects? Or maybe you still go to the library and research from books?

HERE ARE SOME THOUGHTS FROM YOUR PEERS:
Noooo! It totally defeats the purpose of learning and the teachers are bound to find out! It never helps for your exam or later in life and if it's gonna land you a detention - why try?
Apeksha, 12, Belgium
I always have and I always do.
Annie, 13, Hartlepool
I do because it's easier than thinking.
Joseph, 13, Northern Ireland
Copying information off the Internet without giving credit is WRONG. It is called pla·gia·rism. If a teacher or an adult finds out, you can loose all credit for an assignment, receive detentions, or even receive an "F" for the class you are in.

WHAT IF THIS WERE YOU?
1) Jonas and Jesus have worked hard on their new website. It has many interactive features. Their teacher has praised them for their work. The day before the entire class is to review their site, the boys find that someone has almost literally copied their site word for word, BUT rearranged the order of the information. They gave no credit to Jonas and Jesus for their work.Is this wrong?
2) Sara and Suchita want to download some new music for their I-Pods. They find a site where they don't have to pay for each download, and proceed to update their I-Pods. They now have all the current music that their friends are jealous of. Is this wrong?
3) Rico is staying with his host parents in France. He knows a site with the latest movie releases from the U.S. he can watch on his computer. Is he wrong to do so?

ARREST AND PROSECUTION

If you answered 'no' to any of these scenarios, you could get in serious trouble if it were you. Each person would be stealing. Whether it be information from the Internet, music, or movies. Penalties for stealing information in this way can range from fines to jail time.
Everyone has a right to earn a living. Whether you are an artist who makes music, or a webmaster creating a website; this is your intellectual property. People who take it from you are stealing. Whether creating a website, doing homework, or copy and pasting a picture; you must give credit where credit is due.

PUBLIC DOMAIN: Works that are in the public domain belong to everyone and can be freely used without compensating the authors. There are many reasons why a work may be in the public domain.

ROYALTY: In exchange for a License to do something with a copyrighted work, the person who wants to use the work (referred to as the "licensee") will usually have to pay a certain amount of money, called a "royalty," to the Copyright Owner or other person licensing out the work (referred to as the "licensor").

TRADEMARK: A "trademark" is any word, name, symbol or device used by a person or a company to identify and distinguish its products (as opposed to services, which are covered by Service Marks) from the products of others in the same business. Titles, character names, and other distinctive features of advertisements (including songs) may be registered as trademarks of the person or company who offers the products advertised. For example, the shape of the Coca-Cola bottle and the Nike swoosh are both trademarks.

SOUND RECORDING: A "sound recording" describes the capturing of a musical performance and its sounds in any format, such as a cassette tape, compact disc (CD), or MP3 file. In copyright law, this is often referred to as the "Fixation" of sound. Copying a recording, such as making a cassette tape from a friend's CD or burning a CD from another disc, is among the rights covered by copyright law.
