Cyber Smart: Identifying Good Sites

Please read the following information below. Perform any assignment the webpage asks you to do. Print out your worksheet. All assignments will be due tommorrow.

ANYONE CAN MAKE A WEBSITE

You know that anyone can make a website. This causes a problem for students who are looking for 'good' information when working on a school project. The Better Business Bureau, (BBB)  is an organization that looks out for the average person who purchases items each day and also uses the web. They have come up with a program that helps identify good sites for young people to use.

KID'S PRIVACY SEAL

The Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) requires by law that all businesses with any part of their website (or online service) directed to children under the age of 13 identify that it is collect ing information from them.  These sites must meet the COPPA regulations.

To meet these requirements for the seal, website or online service operators must:

  • obtain parental consent before any personally identifiable information can be collected, used or disclosed;
  • obtain parental consent before children are allowed to post or communicate directly with others;
  • provide warnings and explanations in easy-to-understand language;
  • avoid collecting more information than necessary when offering children's games and activities;
  • be careful in the way they provide hyperlinks;
  • and follow strict rules when sending email.

FIVE POINTS FOR CHECKING SITES:

1. Accuracy of Web Documents

  • Who wrote the page and can you contact him or her?
  • What is the purpose of the document and why was it produced?
  • Is this person qualified to write this document?

2. Authority of Web Documents

  • Who published the document and is it separate from the "Webmaster?"
  • Check the domain of the document, what institution publishes this document?
  • Does the publisher list his or her qualifications?

3. Objectivity of Web Documents

  • What goals/objectives does this page meet?
  • How detailed is the information?
  • What opinions (if any) are expressed by the author?

4. Currency of Web Documents

  • When was it produced?
  • When was it updated'
  • How up-to-date are the links (if any)?

5. Coverage of the Web Documents

  • Are the links (if any) evaluated and do they complement the documents' theme?
  • Is it all images or a balance of text and images?
  • Is the information presented cited correctly?
